SUMMARY:We Are Neighbors Together::The Harrison
DESCRIPTION:We Are Neighbors Together::The Harrison is a dynamic multimedia storytelling initiative bringing visibility to the lives and voices of residents at the historic Harrison Hotel—one of downtown Oakland’s last remaining single room occupancy (SRO) buildings. Since the 1980s\, Downtown Oakland has lost thousands of low-cost rooms to redevelopment. The Harrison Hotel\, built in 1914\, became deeply affordable supportive housing in 1996. \nLed by Commons Archive\, a grassroots history project\, in partnership with Lifelong Medical Care and the Oakland Lowdown\, the project invites the public into the lived experiences of those often left out of conversations around community care\, gentrification\, and displacement. \nOver the past year\, artist Sue Mark and photographer Monique Blodgett have collaborated with Harrison Hotel residents and staff to gather raw stories of struggle and resilience. They’ve co-created a safe space: building trust\, listening deeply\, and curating a warm experience where residents openly shared stories about hope\, healing\, and belonging. \nThroughout the year\, the windows at the Lowdown and the Harrison transform into vibrant public galleries with life-size mural portraits and documentary film. The project includes community celebrations with free hot meals and produce\, supportive services\, music offerings\, and curbside open mic and screenings on the HEAR HERE Community Billboard. \nJoin us for a free event at the Lowdown on July 30 from noon to 3 p.m. to celebrate this powerful project. We’ll provide free meals and fresh produce thanks to the Self Help Hunger Program. \nWhat began as a storytelling process has become something deeper: an opportunity for personal transformation\, where storytellers have made huge life changes. Releasing their stories publicly is healing. \n‘We Are Neighbors Together’ provides a platform to record\, save\, and share knowledge about homelessness\, told by the real experts: those who have experienced housing insecurity firsthand. \nPhotographer Monique Blodgett and artist Sue Mark pose at the Lowdown in front of the murals they created.\n  \nJada Folse (left) of Lifelong Medical poses with Linda\, a former Harrison resident.
