About the Oakland Lowdown

We are a studio and a hub for artists, journalists and community members in Oakland to amplify local stories, shed light on important issues and share vital information that our communities need to thrive.

The Oakland Lowdown is powered by the Journalism + Design lab at The New School, as part of a national program to equip more people to participate in circulating reliable news and information in their communities.

The Oakland Lowdown started in the summer of 2021 by artist Chris Treggiari, a professor at the California College of the Arts, and journalist Cole Goins, managing director of the Journalism + Design lab. You can read about our early days in this article from The Oaklandside’s Natalie Orenstein.
