Sanctuary City Project

Since 2017, the Sanctuary City Project (SCP) has engaged individuals and institutions in dialogue and participatory art-making around sanctuary cities and immigration policy. By connecting with people in public spaces, artists Chris Treggiari (co-founder of the Oakland Lowdown) and Sergio De La Torre gathered experiences and perspectives related to immigration and transformed quotes from the conversations into powerful visual language and artwork: through silkscreen posters, billboards, neon signs, and apparel.
Over the years, SCP has assembled a public archive of oral histories and created artworks directly inspired by our interactions with the public. At a time when the Trump administration has forced upheaval and separation in immigrant and refugee families and communities, this project seeks to elevate the voices of immigrants and the impact of policies that protect and support them.
